In October, 1965, while a student at ASU, I worked for the school newspaper “The State Press” as a photojournalist. One of the assignments I had was to photograph and interview Jack Benny who was arriving in town to do his show at Gammage Auditorium. I was very excited because Jack Benny and Bob Hope were my dad’s favorite comedians, mine too! I arrived at the airport and got my photos of Mr. Benny coming down the stairs of the commercial super-constellation airplane and photos of him in the 1922 Maxwell car. The interview was to be held at the Caravan Hotel on Van Buren, a classy place at the time. Parking was a problem so I parked in back and came in the back way to the conference room where the interview session was to begin. Coming in the back door I found that I was the first photographer in and was there with only Jack Benny and his front man. I apologized for being early and asked if I should go outside. Mr. Benny smiled and asked, “Tell me who you are and who are you reporting for”. He said, “You must be pretty excited to be here!” I told him that my excitement was minor compared to what my dad would feel when he found out what I was doing and said, “You have been my dad’s favorite since early radio”. The rest of the news corp came in and the mass interview went for about 45 minutes. Jack asked if there were any more questions and started to leave when he turned around I said to me, “Oh Larry, be sure to tell your dad Hello!” What a day to remember!
