    Not the best Benny
With weekly offerings in radio and television for twenty years at this point, and at this particular time doing BOTH radio and television, it would be fair to say Jack Benny was due his off weeks. Johnny Ray was an Elvis type of the day and very successful, and the premise of his skit was that he believed he was worth $10,000 for a television appearance. Well, not even Bing Crosby got that out of Jack, and one can imagine the reaction! But the skit was (in my opinion) pretty dumb, and the rest of the show was also largely forgettable--with one exception. The wonderful Danny Thomas was there to heckle Jack, from the audience. (That must have been quite a treat!) Young, lean and energetic, he comfortably fits in to Jack as his straight man for some very funny moments. Why can't guys be this funny any more?
